Pop-Up Shelters Open In Green Country To Keep People Safe During Freezing Temperatures

Tulsa area nonprofits are doing what they can to make sure people are safe in these freezing temperatures.

There are pop-up shelters as well as groups driving around to see if everyone is okay.

"We have a lot of clothing donations which has been great, we have cots for our guests to sleep on, blankets from the red cross, food is being delivered every day from Iron Gate the soup kitchen downtown," said Kathy Loehr with Family & Children's Services.

The Tulsa Dream Center's West Campus is one of the pop-up shelters.

It gives people and their pets a safe place to go to stay warm.

Loehr says they've seen 50 to 100 people.

"On Saturday when outreach efforts started, some decided not to go, and Sunday when we continued and followed up with those folks, knowing that they were still out there, they did agree to seek shelter which was very encouraging as the weather turned worse yesterday," she said.

Britni Kelso works with the Mental Heatlh Association of Oklahoma and said they've also had groups driving around and helping people.

She said the pop-up shelters offer warm showers and food, and she worries about people who are not inside.

"I do worry about them, several of them were worried we would be overcrowded, they are used to their little area, and their tents so I just encouraged them to come in and check it out," she said.

Loehr says keeping people safe in these temperatures is the top priority, and she wants people to know they are welcome inside the shelters.

"These are Tulsa citizens, and they are people, and it's important for us to make sure they are safe, just like we make sure our families are safe," she said.
