Holland Hall Head Cross Country Coach Hikes 3,100 Miles Along The Continental Divide Trail

Holland Hall's head cross country coach has been hiking the Continental Divide Trail since May.

Greg Spencer left the day after cheering on his students at the state meet and now, they're cheering on him, as they follow him online.

"You can go several days with not seeing a single person. Sometimes just it's just me and the cows and sometimes I'm just talking back to the cows to get some interaction. At times it's tough to go through that," said Spencer.

Spencer is currently in Montana and less than 500 miles from his destination, the Canadian border. Even though it's been more than 80 days since he left Tulsa, he's keeping his family, friends, and students updated on his blog.

"They enjoy seeing me going through all that stuff I kind of try to share those experiences like when things are tough you just kind of got to push through it. It kind of stinks at the time, but in the end you'll get through it," said Spencer.

He's pushed through the tough times, like the time he was sick in New Mexico and alone on the trail, to get to the good times.

"We did a sunrise summit of Grey's Peak in Colorado which is the highest point on the continental trail. I think it's like 14,000 feet. It was a tough trail in pitch black. Watching the sunrise come up was, I mean that's probably been my highlight," said Spencer.

He's on his sixth pair of shoes and has hiked through thunderstorms, waist deep snow, and now he's trying to avoid wildfires out west. He's even met a couple of Oklahomans on the trail.

"There's lots of great places in Oklahoma to hike. You don't have to go all the way to Montana where I'm at right now. Just get out there and enjoy it. Turkey Mountain is a great place. That's where basically I did all my training," said Spencer.

He hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2004 and the Pacific Crest Trail in 2016. He said the encouragement he's received on his blog are helping him push through the final three weeks.
