Bob Stoops announced today that he will no longer serve as the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma after 18 seasons at the helm. Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, who is entering his third season with the team, will reportedly be promoted to Head Coach.
Rumors have swirled recently about how and when Stoops, 56, may step down, but many expected him to remain in the position for the next couple of seasons.
Riley, 33, meanwhile, reportedly interviewed for other head coaching positions in the off-season before deciding to remain with the Sooners.
Stoops is expected to meet with the team, which is ranked in the top 10 of many pre-season rankings, this afternoon. He has stated his sudden retirement is not related to any health issues.
