(One Of Life's Mysteries SOLVED)... Why Does Microwave Popcorn Smell So Bad?... Um, Bearcat Pee?
Microwave popcorn smells so bad (or good depending on your taste) because of one of several artificial flavorings known for their oily, buttery vibe.
One of the most common flavorings in popcorn is a compound called diacetyl which leads to the buttery flavor, but the issue is sniffing in too much of it can be dangerous.
There is also a compound called 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline which gives off a toasted smell. This compound is actually found in the urine of a bearcat found in Southeast Asia… the animal is known to smell like buttery popcorn.
