Aikman Surprises Henryetta Students, Announces Blake Shelton Will Perform Next Summer

NFL legend Troy Aikman was in his hometown of Henryetta Friday to surprise students ahead of Friday's game against Haskell.

Aikman also made a major announcement about a concert he is hosting next summer. The pro football star and former Henryetta quarterback came back home not just to hype everyone up for the game, but to announce Blake Shelton will be performing in the town next summer.

Dressed in their western wear, students filed in for their pep assembly with all their own hype. Henryetta quarterback Brady Norman said everyone had a feeling there would be a special guest.

"There was kind of a talk around school about it, but I never really believed it,” Brady Norman said.

About 20 minutes into the cheering, the 4th through 12 graders were introduced to one of their own. Mayor Jennifer Munholland introduced the special guest to the crowd, saying, “Welcome home Troy Aikman!”

After 12 seasons playing for "America's Team,” Aikman said this is still home.

"Whenever they say, ‘Where are you from?’ I don't ever hesitate. It's Henryetta, Oklahoma,” Aikman said.

The three-time Superbowl champ had his own surprise for everyone. He is hosting a new "Highway to Henryetta" music festival, with a big name on the performance list.

"He goes by the name of Blake Shelton,” Aikman said before the crowd cheered.

"That's gonna be huge for our town. Hopefully, our town can handle it. That'll be awesome,” Norman said.

The concert will be June 11th at Nichols Park.

Beyond all the hype, Aikman hopes his visit leaves a lasting impression.

"I hope that what I represent for them is someone who gives them the realization that anything's possible,” he said.

“Troy Aikman’s Highway to Henryetta” organizers said the proceeds from the concert will go back to the district and the community. School district leaders said it is unclear right now exactly how that money will be used.
