The City of Tulsa is planning to add lights at an intersection where a man was hit and killed while trying to cross the street.

Police said this has been a big problem near Admiral and Sheridan for years. Police said they work a lot of crashes that involve cars and people walking and they said it's past time something changes.

News on 6 has covered multiple collisions involving vehicles and people walking at this intersection. Last October, a person walking on Admiral was hit by a car and died. A few years before, a person was hit, and the driver left the scene.

Monday night, police said a driver hit a homeless man in the street.

"All of a sudden, this person walked out and hit them," said Officer Jeanne Pierce. 

Pierce said the area around the intersection is poorly lit and many more homeless people walk in that area now. 

"There's a lot more foot traffic this year because of the pandemic," Pierce said.

Police said this intersection accounts for nearly 90% of the auto pedestrian crashes in the Tulsa's Mingo Valley division in East Tulsa.

"We had a lighting meeting with PSO and that's one of the locations they looked at," said Terry Ball with the City of Tulsa Street and Water Department.

Ball said they've received many requests to improve lighting on Admiral and now that they have the funding, they plan to start adding lights there from Yale to Memorial.

"There's a lot of pedestrians walking down that corridor," said Ball. "Any area we have gaps in the lighting, we're going to see what we can do to get that."

Police said until that happens, people need to be very careful near that intersection. 

"We have signals there that have push buttons, unfortunately people choose to cross at unmarked intersections," Ball said.

Police did not arrest the driver in Monday night's crash.
